PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF LORD AND LADY FAIRHAVEN
A MINIATURE OF A HAWKING PARTY, BY MILLOT, AFTER PHILIPS WOUWERMAN, CIRCA 1720
Rectangular, signed l.c., painted on ivory, ebonised wood frame
9.5cm., 3¾in. wide
Royal House of Saxony (inv.C.nr. 299)
It is conceivable that this miniature, signed ‘Millot’, is the work of Henri Millot (d. 1756), an artist better known for his portraits. The composition is based on a painting by Philips Wouwerman in the collection of the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (see Birgit Schumacher, Philips Wouwerman, The Horse Painter of the Golden Age, Doornspijk, 2006, cat. no. A112). When the painting was in the collection of the Chevalier de la Roque, circa 1745, André Laurent produced a line engraving - rendering the subject in reverse - that was published with the title ‘Les Adieux’.
