SOUTHERN GERMAN SCHOOL, LATE 15TH CENTURY
The Mocking of Christ
oil on panel, unframed, a collector's black wax seal on the reverse
74 x 45.5 cm.; 29⅛ x 17⅞ in.
The panel is cradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is slightly dirty, and the varnish clear and even. An old vertical split which runs the height of the panel is just visible, one third of the way from the left margin, with some associated retouchings. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these, and also reveals fine lines of retouching throughout, as well as a few bigger areas including: throughout the greens of the standing figure holding a stick, in the right side of the hair of the figure with his back turned far left, as well as his proper right side and proper left knee and calf, and in the yellow tunic of the kneeling figure lower right. There is an extensive campaign of retouching along the lower margin, with the biggest patch measuring 16 x 8cm. All of these are sensitively executed, and the painting appears bright and ready to hang.
