NORTHERN CARAVAGGESQUE SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY
Allegory of the five senses
oil on canvas
163.1 x 243.5 cm.; 64¼ x 95⅞ in.
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty, and the varnish is slightly discolored. No major damages are visible to the naked eye. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a milky varnish, underneath which retouchings are visible: spot and wash retouchings scattered in the background, most notably upper centre; spot and wash retouchings scattered in the figures and the tablecloth, most notably in the chest of the woman on the left, the striped sleeve of the hatted figure, and in the jacket of the right-most figure; and strengthenings scattered in the figures, for example in the hat and faces of the central three figures, and the dark creases of the woman's dress. These are all sensitively executed, and the painting appears in overall good condition. Offered in a carved parcel-gilt frame with minor losses
