Property from a Private Collection
JUAN DE ARELLANO
Santorcaz 1614 - 1676 Madrid
Still life of tulips, bluebells and other flowers in a basket on a stone pedestal
oil on canvas
45.7 x 61.5 cm.; 18 x 24¼ in.
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is even but somewhat darkened. There are no damages visible to the naked eye. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a fairly extensive campaign of restoration consisting of older retouchings in the background on the right-hand side, most concentrated in an inch-wide band down the right margin, and more recent retouchings scattered throughout the background on the left-hand side, along the upper, left and lower margins, and in the stone ledge and some of the flowers to disguise the network of craquelure - none of which distract from the readability of the image. In overall good condition. Offered in a carved and gold painted frame with egg and dart decoration.
