CIRCLE OF ANNE-LOUIS GIRODET DE ROUCY-TRIOSON
Zephyr and Flora
bears monogram lower right: ALG (AL in ligature)
oil on canvas
73.2 x 93.1 cm.; 28¾ x 36⅝ in.
The canvas has a firm relining, the surface is slightly dirty, and the varnish is slightly discoloured. There is some evidence of wear through some of the more thinly painted area, such as the figures' hair. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the thick varnish but there appear to be fine lines of retouching to disguise some of the network of craquelure, notably in Zephyr's hair and proper left eye, and in Flora's proper right arm. Another small patch of retouching is in the pink billowing fabric upper left, and on the centre left margin. In fairly good condition. Offered in a gilt wood frame with bead and lamb's tongue mouldings with a few minor losses.
