CASTILIAN SCHOOL, EARLY 16TH CENTURY
The birth of the Virgin
oil on panel
57.2 x 43.2 cm.; 22½ x 17 in.
The panel is formed of two vertical planks, with a canvas support running along the join, and is slightly warped. The presence of old woodworm is very apparent from the reverse. The paint surface is slightly dirty, and the varnish slightly discoloured. The gold leaf and the colours remain bright and well preserved, save for the blues which have darkened. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a vertical line of retouching along the aforementioned panel join, and to a vertical line running from the lower margin a third of the way from the right-hand side, which corresponds to a split approx. 20cm. long. Spot retouchings are visible throughout, the more concentrated areas of which are around the edge of the Virgin's pillow, to a small area in her halo, around the edge of the plate (right), in the lower right corner, and to a vertical line running from the face to the hand of the figure who holds Christ on the left. In overall fair condition.
