Property from a European Private Collection
CASTILIAN SCHOOL, 15TH CENTURY
The Resurrected Christ with Mary and Saint John the Evangelist
oil and gold ground on panel, in a Gothic frame
overall dimensions: 94.5 x 138.8 cm.; 37¼ x 54⅝ in.
Each figure is painted on a thick, vertical panel - all three of which are supported and joined together with two horizontal battens. Nails used to secure the battens are visible from the front in the lower parts of each painting. The Gothic frame has been applied to the front of the panels. The paint surfaces are dirty, and the varnish is discoloured. There is a loss in the base of Christ's tomb approx. 1 x 1cm. Retouching is visible along a vertical surface split on the left-hand side of the left-most panel; throughout the centre of Christ's head and body; and to St John's face and the robe below his hand. The blue of the Madonna's robe appears to have degraded and consequently retouched. The gold background similarly appears to have been quite extensively retouched, particularly to the left of Christ. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the very old varnish. More recent restorations, which fluoresce, include a patch 1 x 1 cm. in Christ's hair, and the top of St John's hair. In overall moderate condition.
