ALONSO DE SEDANO | God the Father Enthroned, surrounded by three angels, one holding the veil of Veronica
ALONSO DE SEDANO
Burgos? circa 1465 - 1533
God the Father Enthroned, surrounded by three angels, one holding the veil of Veronica
oil on panel
146 x 108 cm.; 57½ x 42½ in.
The large thick panel is in good overall condition - and is only very slightly bowed. There are some supportive blocks adhered to the reverse. The paint surface itself has a somewhat uneven varnish layer but the colours are bright and much of the surface appears remarkably well preserved - especially the skin tones, the angels extraordinary peacock wings, the tiles floor and the green red and white clothes of the figures. The pigments that have suffered are the yellow of the clothes of the angel at the right that has sunk and thinned, and the gold cloth/ halo and crown in the centre appears to have some restoration throughout.
Inspection under ultra violet light reveals a scattering of restorations throughout - mostly of a seemingly cosmetic nature - the more major areas of retouching are confined to three lines - the first and most significant area restoration is along an old panel join that runs the length of the panel through the orb - the cross is repainted. The blocks on the reverse are likely to support this join.
There are two old restored surface cracks, one running vertically down from the upper right corner, the other from the upper left corner - both measuring approx. 11 inches in length.
Offered in a modern dark wood 'box frame' with the panel suspended in the middle, held in place by brackets.
