Condition Report

Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.

The canvas is unlined, and the paint surface is relatively clean. There has been flaking in the past along the lower edge, which now seems stable. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an uneven varnish underneath which retouchings are visible: to the aforementioned areas of past flaking along the lower margin which seems to have been quite extensive; scattered along the other margins; pin-prick spots and fine lines scattered in the sky; in two more concentrated areas in the sky upper right to restored damages, the largest measuring 8 x 5 cm.; to a repaired t-shaped tear which fluoresces lightly in the dark background to the left of Christ's shoulder measuring 5 x 2.5 cm.; to a spot in the lower left of Christ's robe; and scattered in His chin, hair, and the side of his face. Otherwise there are only a handful of scattered, cosmetic retouchings, with none of this intervention impeding the legibility of the image, which is ready to hang.
