Condition Report

Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.

Both canvases are unlined, the paint surfaces are stable with very dirty old varnishes. There are no major new damages visible to either canvas. There are a handful of surface scuffs and scratches on both.

The Hawking Party

There is an area of discoloured retouching to the lower centre of this canvas below the outstretched arm of the huntsman on foot. There is a degree of wear to the horse’s ear on the far right, visible to the naked eye. Inspection under UV light confirms this and another significant area of restoration to the top of the tree in the centre and at the lower right corner. A scattering of other more minor restorations are visible throughout.

The Boar Hunt

There is a surface scratch of the head of the mounted figure on the right; a small cleaning test to the centre left margin. Inspection under UV light reveals a scattering of cosmetic retouches mostly to the lower foreground.

Both canvases are in nice original condition, they are framed as a pair and offered in black carved wood frames with gilt edges, also in good condition.
