Jacob Toorenvliet was born in Leiden to Abraham Toorenvliet, a glass painter and draughtsman. Jacob studied under his father, as did Frans van Mieris the Elder and Matthijs Naiveu, and he completed his training under the guidance of Gerrit Dou, whose meticulous technique and style laid the foundations for the Dutch school of 'fijnschilders' (fine painters). The two would eventually become brothers after Jacob's father married Dou's widowed mother. To further enhance his artistic training, Jacob left Leiden and travelled south during the 1660s and 70s, and the present painting, dated 1671, bathed in a warm southern light, and set before an Italianate coastal landscape, displays the influences of this journey. Jacob was in Rome during this period, where he joined the fraternity of Netherlandish painters called the 'Bentvueghels.'
