Anonymous sale, London, Christie's South Kensington, 10 July 1997, lot 107 (as Attributed to Thomas Spencer), where acquired by the present owner.

The horse depicted in the present painting is probably the same chestnut mare called Moll Roe who belonged to Mr Blackney and is recorded as running in Ireland in 1744 when she was third in a race at Galway.
