Condition Report

Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.

The canvas is lined, and the paint surface has a slightly discoloured varnish. There is minor frame abrasion along the left margin. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouchings throughout the sky and along the lower margin, strengthenings in the darks of the garments of the five figures on the left-hand side of the composition, and four more concentrated areas of retouching: in the cloak of the second left-most figure, in the right-hand side of the arch just above the classical statue, in the vaulted arch upper centre measuring 2.5 x 3 cm., and in the highest section of the column topped by a sphere upper right measuring approx. 4 x 3 cm. None of these impede the legibility of the painting, which is ready to hang.
