Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.
Both canvases are unlined, the paint surfaces are slightly dirty, and the varnishes are slightly discoloured. Stretcher marks along all four margins are visible in both paintings. Both works have been painted on a dark ground which has become slightly more visible in the latter painting (the river landscape).
The former (the coastal landscape) has old, visible retouchings to former, old losses: in the centre of the upper margin, in the water just by the shore centre left, in the foreground lower left and lower centre, and in the lower right corner. Retouching is also visible in the sky (centre) to two areas measuring 3 cm. long. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these and reveals further small retouchings scattered through the sky and clouds, and in the middle ground.
The latter (river landscape): there is a small loss in the centre of the upper margin and retouchings are visible to other previous losses just to the right of this, in the two lower corners, and in the centre of the right margin. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these and further reveals few and small retouchings scattered in the centre of the sky, and in the lower left quadrant.
The paintings are in overall good condition.
