Condition Report

Property from Various Owners is available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 13 and 16 – 18 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment.

The panel appears to be formed of three vertical planks, and has three horizontal battens affixed to the reverse. It is slightly bowed and appears stable. The furthest right join has cracked and is visible from the front, with associated small losses and retouchings (visible in the catalogue illustration). The paint surface has a discoloured and uneven varnish, and is slightly worn. There is a vertical split in the panel in the upper left corner approx. 10 cm. long, and a restored damage in and to the right of Christ's right hand measuring approx. 1 x 3 cm. There are a few, scattered small spots of paint loss, as well as surface scratches with associated retouching (notably centre left). Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the uneven varnish which fluoresces opaque, making it difficult to discern further intervention. The painting appears to be in overall moderate condition.
