Condition Report

Property from the SØR Rusche Collection is available to view at Sotheby’s, New Bond Street, 13 – 18 September (weekdays 9am – 4.30pm; weekend 12-5pm).

The canvas is lined. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured. A distinct network of craquelure is visible, particularly in the sitter's flesh tones and in his white cuffs and cravatte. There is a small loss on the left hand margin, just above the book, and some frame abrasion visible on the margin in the upper left corner. Inspection under UV light reveals some pin prick spots of retouching scattered in the book cover, and a handful of small retouchings scattered in the sitter's sleeve, his proper left shoulder, and in the background. There are also some pin-prick spots in his forehead and cheek, but the painting appears to be overall largely untouched. The painting is in overall fair condition.
