SWISS SCHOOL, 1597
PORTRAIT OF JOHANNES MEYER, HALF LENGTH, AGED 60
inscribed and dated upper left: 1597 / D·IOANNES MEŸER / PRÆTOR / FRIBVRGENSIS
inscribed upper right: ANNO / ÆTATIS / SVÆ · LX
oil on canvas
canvas: 25⅝ by 20⅛ in.; 65.1 by 51.1 cm.
framed: 29¼ by 23¾ in.; 74.3 by 60.3 cm.
The canvas is lined. A handsome sitter reads well. Craquelure that appears to be stable is visible throughout. A thick horizontal line of retouching runs horizontally from the extreme edges, connecting with a vertical line of retouching that extends in the right to the bottom edge. These fluoresce under UV and possibly address an are of loss. A small circular spot of repair is to the right of the sitter's face, which also fluoresces under UV. Further scattered spots of discolored retouches are visible throughout, like for example in the face of the sitter and background. Offered in an ebonized frame with gold liners.
