Thence by descent to the present owner in 1995.

This painting borrows elements from two different portraits of Claudia de' Medici by Suttermans in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence: a full length portrait with a dog (inv. no. 142 / Oggetti d'Arte Poggio a Caiano) and a three-quarter length portrait (inv. no. 1890 - 752). The elegant fall of the curtain in the background and the delicate manner by which her proper right hand rests on the table are similar to the full length portrait, while the absence of a letter under her hand, the costume she wears and the handkerchief she holds are consistent with the three-quarter length portrait.
