Condition Report

Painting suffered impact to the upper right corner. A restorer removed the loose debris and consolidated with hide glue the remaining wood fibers. Only the area that suffered loss in the upper right corner was retouched and locally varnished by the restorer.

The panel appears to consist of one board with a horizontal batten on the reverse that keeps it flat and stable. The paint surface has thinned, particularly in the background buildings. A diagonal scratch of about 5 in. is in the lower right quadrant, while two diagonal lines forming an X of about 3 in. that are barely visible are in the face of Saint John. Some minor craquelure is visible throughout, as well as some scattered discolored retouches. Some small area of loss are along the edges, though these are not too distracting. Pindots of old, minor wormholes are at center left. Inspection under UV reveals scattered spots of retouches, like for example in the child's body at left, the Madonna's face and her robes. Offered unframed.

Catalogue Note

This composition derives from Andrea del Sarto's fresco in the Porta a Pinti, one of the city gates of Florence destroyed in 1865 during the creation of the Viale di Circonvallazione, a series of boulevards inspired by Paris. Although the original fresco is lost, its existence is known through the writings of Giorgio Vasari and the numerous copies painted of it.
