BALTHASAR NEBOT

A MARKET SCENE WITH FRUIT AND VEGETABLE SELLERS IN FRONT OF A WALLED TOWN

signed and dated lower left: B Nebot 1751

oil on canvas

canvas: 34 ¾ by 58 ¼ in.; 88.3 by 148 cm.

framed: 39 by 62 in.; 99.1 by 157.5 cm.

Anonymous sale ("The Property of a Lady"), London, Christie's, 17 July 1992, lot 21;

With Lane Fine Art, London;

From whom acquired 9 June 1995.

Apart from his marriage in London circa 1729, very little is known of Nebot's life. He had a particular interest in depicting market scenes that included vegetable stalls, fish markets, and fruit vendors. Although Nebot initially specialized in topographical scenes of London, the urban scene in this painting is closer in style to the works by Peter Angelis (1685 - 1734).
