Condition Report

The canvas has an old and very sensitive relining. the paint surface has a very old, very discoloured varnish that appears very matt as opposed to shiny. there is a decree of surface dirt, and excretions, for example above the chimneys at the centre left. There are a few losses scattered throughout the canvas, most notably along the right hand margin in the dark tones of the archway at the right; at the lower centre in the foreground and a handful of pinprick losses elsewhere including one in the face of the gentleman wearing a black hat on the left. There is a degree of wear visible in some of the darker tones for example in the shadows in the foreground and those cast by the group of men centre left and in the clothes in the figures on the left. There are, visible to the naked eye, visible old retouchings scattered throughout that have discoloured with age. The most significant concentration of which are within the shadows of the archway at the right and at the upper right corner.

Inspection under ultra-violet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals further strenghtenings in the architecture of the colonnade at the right. There are further strengthenings throughout the foreground and in the brown pigments used to strengthen shadows in the details in the figures and dogs. It is appears likely that there is some old wash stregthenings in the sky. In overall fair 'country house condition'. Offered in a carved gesso and gilt wood frame with only a few losses.

Catalogue Note

This previously unrecorded painting is presented here for the first time as a work by Luca Carlevarijs, the first of the great Venetian view painters, and as such is an exciting new addition to the artist’s painted œuvre. Only two other canvases of a similar size are known: that in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford,1 and the Gentleman on the Fondamenta Nuove, Venice, before the church of San Lazzaro dei Mendicanti, offered at Christie’s, London, 7 July 2016, lot 37. The figure of the roasted chestnut vendor seated on the right here is also similar to that in the foreground of the painting formerly in the Dall'Agnese collection.2 The appearance of the Piazza San Marco in this painting suggests that the work dates from before 1723–25, when the square was paved – here, the state of the ground shows clearly that it has been depicted prior to this renovation work.

We are grateful to Charles Beddington for endorsing the attribution to Carlevarijs on the basis of first-hand inspection; and to Dario Succi for his help with the cataloguing of this lot, and for endorsing the attribution to Carlevarijs on the basis of a digital image.

Further paintings and works of art acquired from the Stowe sale by Robert Berkeley (1794–1874), together with other items from the collection at Spetchley Park, are to be sold in these rooms on 11 December 2019. Please refer to the dedicated catalogue for further information.
