Description

Property from a Private Collection

STUDIO OF MELCHIOR DE HONDECOETER

Utrecht 1636 - 1695 Amsterdam

Poultry and a lapwing in a garden landscape, with a pigeon in flight and two birds of prey in the distance

oil on canvas

112.5 x 148.5 cm.; 44¼ x 58½ in.

Condition Report

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured. The dark ground has become more visible in the sky upper left, and in other lighter areas the weave of the canvas has also become slightly more visible. Some areas of craquelure have become slightly more defined, such as in the bodies of the chicken and cockerel upper right. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a fluorescing varnish making intervention difficult to discern, but some areas of retouching are visible throughout the sky, to an area in the branch upper left 5 x 4 cm., and to some other small areas in the background beneath this, as well as to some patches in the background along the right and lower margins. The majority of the composition appears to be largely untouched. The painting is in overall seemingly good condition and will respond well to cleaning.
