Saint Michael vanquishing the Devil

oil on canvas

107.1 x 79.3 cm.; 42⅛ x 31¼ in.

Condition Report

The canvas is lined, and the paint surface is slightly dirty with a discoloured and slightly blanched varnish. The network of craquelure is more pronounced in some of the darker pigments. There is a paint loss in the sky upper left beneath St Michael’s hand (visible in the catalogue illustration). Slight painting lifting in this area has resulted in a handful of further pin-prick losses, and the same is true in the chest of St Michael - these should be secured, but the rest of the paint surface is stable. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the thick, milky varnish beneath which it is possible to discern two apparent campaigns of restoration: older retouchings are just visible in the centre of the saint’s shield, and along the margins and particularly in the sky. There also appear to be areas of older retouching in the saint’s chest, in the bottom of his billowing cloak, and around his waistline. The older restoration is even more difficult to discern in the figures of the devils, but more recent retouching is found in some of the dark outlines of these figures, as well as scattered in small dashes through St Michael’s cloak and around the edge of his helmet, as well as in small spots through the sky. In overall fair condition.
