Property from a Private Collection
Berlin 1689 - 1760 London
Two lovers by candlelight
oil on canvas
76.5 x 64 cm.; 30⅛ x 23¼ in.
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured. There are a small number of small, scattered surface scuffs. There is an area of visible retouching in the background along the upper right margin approx. 7 x 10 cm., as well as a small, repaired damage at the edge of the girl's upper sleeve on the left. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the thick, milky varnish underneath which these are confirmed, as well as revealing some further retouching: scattered along the edge of the girl's upper sleeve on the left; in the shadows of her proper left hand, proper right forearm, chest, neck, chin and the silhouette of the right side of her face; a few further spots in the upper part of her face notably her proper right eye; in and around the boys nose as well as wash retouching in his forehead and to a small area in his hair just above this; and along the edge of his proper left sleeve and hand, as well as a patch below this. There are also retouchings along the left and lower margins. In overall fair condition.
