Condition Report

Both canvases are lined, and both paint surfaces are clean with a clear varnish.

The former: there is a small surface scuff in the base of the tree trunk lower left. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching along the upper, right and upper half of the left margins, fine, pin-prick retouchings scattered throughout the sky, and larger more concentrated lines of retouching in the centre of the foliage of the trees (2 cm. long), in three areas in the banks below the castle lower left (2 x 5 cm. long), and a series of horizontal areas in the foreground lower centre and lower right, the longest of which measures 33 cm.

The latter: inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching along the upper margin and in the lower corners, as well as a campaign of retouching consisting of small, free brushstrokes scattered throughout the sky, with more concentrated areas along the horizon to the left of the central tree (2 x 5 cm.), and around the mountain (centre) most notably in an area measuring 2 x 8 cm. There are also small, scattered retouchings in the mountain itself. The foreground appears to remain otherwise largely untouched save for a handful of tiny retouchings in the bank to the right of the figures.

The paintings both appear to be in overall good condition and ready to hang in their current state without a need for further intervention.
