JOHN WOOTTON | A greyhound in a landscape, with a view of Windsor Castle beyond
Snitterfield, Warwickshire circa 1678 - 1764 London
A greyhound in a landscape, with a view of Windsor Castle beyond
oil on canvas, extended, unframed
101 x 130.2 cm.; 39¾ x 55 2/8 in. (including an extension of 15.9 cm.; 6¼ in. along the left-hand margin)
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. The left side of the canvas has been extended (as mentioned in the cataloguing), and there is a loss in this area in the lower left corner where the paint has started to lift (visible in the catalogue illustration), and retouching along its join is visible to the naked eye. There is some bitumenisation in the darker pigments of the foliage, upper left, and notably in the foreground, beside the dog's hind legs and particularly lower right, where some flaking has also resulted in some small losses. (The original canvas in this area has also started to separate from the lining here). There is visible retouching along the margins, as well as a few spots in the sky, notably above the centre of the dog's back (2.5 x 2.5 cm.). Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms all this and shows that the dog itself is largely untouched, save for a handful of further tiny spots scattered in the centre of the dog's flank, at the tip of his nose, and in the sky just beside this. The view of Windsor also remains well-preserved. The painting is in overall fairly good condition and would benefit hugely from cleaning, as a small patch test reveals in the sky.
