oil on canvas

157 x 130 cm.; 61¾ x 51⅛ in.

Condition Report

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. A scattering of old repaired damages with discoloured retouchings are visible to the naked eye, notably: a small area in the left of Christ's mouth; a vertical tear in the right of Christ's robe, 6cm. long; an area in His drapery, lower left, approx. 3 x 15 cm.; to a horizontal repaired tear in the soldier's hand to the left of this, approx. 4 cm. long; an area in the turban of the man, upper right, 2 x 2 cm.; to two small areas in the background just above, 2 x 1 cm.; in the balustrade, lower right, measuring 3 x 2 cm., and below this, between two of the columns, to a repaired tear, 6 cm. long. A degree of wear is visible in some of the darker pigments, such as in the robe of the turbaned man. There are scattered small scuff marks throughout, as well as a handful of small paint losses, the largest of which is in the hair of the soldier on the left, measuring 1 x 0.5 cm. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the thick, milky varnish (streakily applied), which makes further restoration difficult to discern, but there may be an area in the background upper left, measuring approx. 10 x 10 cm. The painting will respond very well to cleaning, and is in overall fairly good condition for a canvas of this size, notwithstanding the discoloured restorations.
