VIRGIN AND CHILD
polychromed oak, on a modern metal stand
Virgin: 103cm., 40½in.
111cm., 43¾in. overall
The Child's proper right hand is lost. The statue was cut down at the bottom, probably due to worming, resulting in losses of the Virgin's feet and some of the drapery. Otherwise the condition is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are a few more minor losses, including to the Child's proper left thumb. It is possible that there could be restorations to the Child's feet which have been overpainted. There is minor stable splitting to the wood, consistent with the material, including to the Child's abdomen and the Virgin's drapery on her proper left side. There is wear to the polychromy, including areas of loss at the high points of the drapery. The polychromy appears to have been refreshed in areas.
The metal stand is in very good condition with minor general wear and oxidation.
