SOUTHERN GERMAN, SWABIA, CIRCA 1500
VIRGIN AND CHILD
gilt and polychromed limewood
Overall the condition of the wood is good, with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is evidence of past worming in particular to the base and the lower part of the sculpture, this has led to some losses around the base and to the bottom of the drapery. There is also some residue visible around this area which may have been applied for reinforcement. There is further evidence of past worming at the back of the sculpture. The child's proper left hand appears to have been reattached at the wrist, and the proper right hand appears to have been recarved. There is stable splitting to the wood, consistent with the material, this has led to a loss to the back of the Virgin's head. There is further stable splitting to the Virgin's proper right hand. The polychromy appears to have been refreshed in parts and there is a yellowish varnish to the surface in areas. There is craquelure to the polychromy, in particular to the flesh tones. There are a few losses to the polychromy in particular to the Virgin's proper left ring finger and the child's proper right arm. A modern wood bar has been applied to the bottom for reinforcement.
