Estimate: 12,000 - 18,000 GBP
NETHERLANDISH OR SOUTHERN GERMAN, EARLY 17TH CENTURY
RELIEF WITH AN ALLEGORY OF PEACE TRIUMPHANT OVER DEATH
walnut, in a walnut frame
relief: 32 by 27cm.. 12½ by 10⅝in.
frame: 44 by 39cm., 17⅜ by 15⅜in.
Overall the condition of the relief is very good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some rubbing to the surface at the high points, notably to the noses of the female nude and the angel above. There is an area of denting with dark residue to the left of the satyr figure. There is minor dark staining in areas, and there are a few further nicks and scratches. There is some evidence of non-active worming to the frame, much of it has been filled. The frame is composed in sections, with some slightly open but stable joints. There is particular wear to the edges of the frame. There appears to be a reattachment to the backboard.

This intriguing relief compares stylistically to the work of Northern Mannerist artists such as Bartholomäus Spranger.
