Giacomo da Castello was a Flemish still life and animal painter active in Italy who became among the most prominent artists in the region of Veneto during the early 18th century. Before moving to Italy, he is recorded in 1649 in the Antwerp workshop of Jan Fyt (1611-1661), a leading Flemish still life painter from the 17th century. The influence Fyt had in Castello's work is seen in this composition through the accurate and precise representation of the animals. Meanwhile, the vivid colors enhanced by chiaroscuro in this work show how Castello developed his own style inspired by Italian artists.
