A VIEW OF A SHIP IN STORMY WEATHER
oil on panel
panel: 18¾ by 31 in.; 47.6 by 78.7 cm.

Although the artist of the present lot is unknown, the influence of Filippo Napoletano is undeniable. Teodoro Filippo di Liagno, called Filippo Napoletano, was an Italian painter and pupil of Leonardo da Vinci. He has an extensive oeuvre, which includes mesmerizing views of sailing ships.
The way the anonymous artist in this work builds the composition, inserting the water, which is shaped by the rock formations, in the foreground is similar to what Napoletano did in Marina con galere in Palazzo Pitti, Florence (inv. no. 1890.4866).(1)
