ATTRIBUTED TO MARTEN PEPIJN

Antwerp 1575 - 1643

THE WEDDING FEAST OF BACCHUS AND ARIADNE

inscribed on the reverse: Martinus . Päpÿn

oil on copper

copper: 18¾ by 24½ in.; 47.6 by 62.2 cm.

framed: 25 by 30¾ in.; 63.5 by 78.1 cm.

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 8 July 2009, lot 162 (as Marten Pepijn);

There acquired.

This work is unique in Pepijn's oevre and was likely done in the early 17th century. The composition derives from an engraving of circa 1580 by Jan Sadeler I after a design by Dirck Barendesz, Mankind Awaiting the Deluge.(1) Notwithstanding, Pepijn converts the subject of the print in this painting by omitting the ark and deluge from the composition and adding two putti, thus changing it to The wedding feast of Bacchus and Ariadne.
