Anonymous sale, Paris, Tajan, 9 December 1999, lot 65 (as Jean Hugues Taraval);

There acquired.

A native of Paris, Hugues Taraval moved to Stockholm between 1732 and 1750 with his father who was also his teacher. After his father's death, Taraval returned to Paris where he studied with Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre and Charles-André van Loo. He spent some time in Rome where he won the Prix de Rome and upon his return to France in 1765, Taraval was admitted at the Académie Royale. He became an accomplished artist of the Rococo with brilliant tonalities and sophisticatedly ornate compositions. This painting recalls the works of François Boucher Charles-Joseph Natoire, and his former master, Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre.
