AFTER CASPAR NETSCHER, 19TH CENTURY

A DUET

oil on canvas, unframed

canvas: 19⅞ by 15⅜ in.; 50.5 by 39.1 cm.

The canvas is thinly lined. In the foreground a beautiful image reads well, though details in the background have sunken. There are very few small spots of loss, the most visible being on the upper left corner. What appears to be an old repair line runs diagonally for about 8 in. on the background at right with a pindot of loss right at center. Another small spot of repair is on the tail of the central figure's white dress at center. Craquelure is here and there, most noticeably at center right with minor dots of associated loss. There is a thin horizontal scratch less than an inch long on the floor, beneath the book. Inspection under UV is difficult to read due to a thick varnish, though there appear to be thin in-paintings addressing the craquelure scattered throughout. Offered unframed.
