74 by 112 mm; 2⅞ by 4½ in

Ernst Holzscheiter, Meilen, by 1956,

his sale, London, Sotheby's, 1 May 1980, lot 40

Geneva, Musée d'Art er d'Histoire, Chefs-d'oeuvre de la miniature et de la gouache, 1956, no. 32

Johann Wilhelm Baur studied with Friedrich Brentel and was, like his master, a miniaturist and an engraver (see the following lot). Most of Baur's compositions are, though, more dominated by their architectural elements, and the rather pastoral aspect of the present work provides a refreshing counterpoint to his typical, highly detailed technique.
