Description

GERMAN SCHOOL, EARLY/MID-16TH CENTURY

BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF A RUGGED, WOODED RIVER LANDSCAPE

Pen and brown ink

201 by 270 mm; 8 by 10⅝ in

This energetically drawn and visually complex landscape would appear to be German in origin, and date from the early to mid-16th century. In some respects it is reminiscent of certain drawings produced in the Danube School orbit of Albrecht Altdorfer, but in terms of the penmanship, if not the composition, there are also echoes of even earlier works, notably those of the Master of the Drapery Studies.
