Description

Property from a Private Collection

SPANISH SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY

AN ALLEGORICAL STILL LIFE OF NOVEMBER, WITH CARROTS, PARSNIPS, FENNEL AND CABBAGE

inscribed upper right: NOBIENBRE

oil on canvas

26¾ by 35 in.; 67.9 by 88.9 cm.

Condition Report

The canvas appears to have a thin relining. It is stable on its stretcher. The image reads clearly beneath an on old and slightly discolored varnish. There are a very few scattered pin dot spots of loss, for example near the center above the carrots, although these are not distracting. Inspection under UV reveals the possibility of more than one campaign of restoration, the older of which is more difficult to discern in areas. Some more recent retouching is concentrated at the extreme edges, possibly to address old frame abrasion. There is a spot of retouching near the center right in the background, an old area of retouching near the letter "N" near upper center, and one area near the lower edge beneath the purple carrots, possibly to attend to old repairs. There are some scattered spots of retouching in the still-life elements, for example some spots in the cabbages at upper right. There are also a few fine strokes in the background around the fruit at left and above the leaves of the purple carrots at right. Offered in a simply carved painted frame with a gilt liner. The frame has a few scattered losses and nicks.
