Property from a Private Collection
PIETER DE HOOCH
(Rotterdam 1629 - 1684 Amsterdam)
INTERIOR WITH AN ELEGANT COUPLE PLAYING MUSIC
oil on canvas laid down on board
23 by 17⅞ in.; 58.4 by 45.4 cm.
The canvas support is laid on board and is flat and stable. An elegant scene reads well despite some thinning and subsequent retouching visible to the naked eye, for example around the man’s head at upper right. Under UV inspection, this area is visible as well as retouching along the lower edge to address frame abrasion, and a larger area of retouching across the woman’s lap, but these are not distracting to the naked eye. Scattered small retouches are visible throughout to address craquelure and sunken shadows for example on the woman’s proper right arm. The painting can hang in its current state. Offered in a dark wood frame with gilded edges.
