Property of a Private Collector
NORTH ITALIAN SCHOOL, CIRCA 1500-1520,
MADONNA AND CHILD
oil on panel
13¾ by 9½ in.; 35 by 24 cm.
The image has not been attended to in sometime and is dirty in some areas. The panel is cradled, though it appears to be made of a few vertical boards. There is a slight undulation to the painted surface. There are three vertical cracks that run the length of the panel. The extreme lower edge and the two upper corners have been left unpainted, although these are covered by the frame. Some of the details of the painted surface have lost some definition, for example in the background and in the blue of Mary's costume. It appears that black paint may have once been added over the upper background, and remnants of this remain in spots. Inspection under UV reveals small spots of recent retouching to the faces of the figures, some in the costume, and some in the vertical cracks. It may be of benefit to contact a professional restorer for an additional opinion.
