1814 - 1900
signed JULES SALLES (lower right)
oil on canvas
45⅛ by 36⅛ in.
114.6 by 91.8 cm
Original unlined condition, with bumping and pulling in the upper left corner. The surface is visibly dirty. There is a 1/8 inch vertical loss under the mother's proper right shoulder. Frame abrasion visible at lower edge and in the upper right corner. Under UV: a thick green varnish fluoresces. A few finely applied retouches are visible on the mother's hair and face and on the baby; and there a small horizontal area of inpainting on the mother's skirt at lower right. There is a large brushy area of inpainting between the yellow kerchief and the upper edge and additional sparse tiny retouches in the background. Scattered inpainting along the lower edge to address prior frame abrasion. Ready to hang in its current state.
