ABU AL-MAJID AL-TABIB AL-BAYDAWI, KITAB TASHRIH, COPIED BY ABU AL-QASIM AL-HASANI, PERSIA, QAJAR, DATED 1233 AH/1818 AD
Persian manuscript on gold sprinkled paper, 70 leaves, plus 3 fly-leaves, 20 lines to the page, written in nasta’liq in black ink, headings and important words in red nasta’liq, six illustrations in multicoloured ink, several diagrams in red, in a light brown stamped binding
21.2 by 15.4cm.
The manuscript is divided as follows and contains six illustrations:
Book I (ff.1b-55b):
Introduction (ff.1b-20b).
Chapter 1 (ff.21b-26a): on the bones of the body, with a drawing of the skeleton on f.21b.
Chapter 2 (ff.26b-31b): on nerves, with a drawing of the nervous system on f.26b.
Chapter 3 (ff.32a-35b): on arteries, with a drawing of the arterial system on f.32a and of the venous system on f.35b.
Chapter 4 (ff.35b-55b): on muscles.
Book II (ff.56a-70a):
Divided into seven chapters (babs), with one human drawing on f.56a and a figure of a woman on f.70a, carrying a foetus.
This copy is particularly interesting as the name of the scribe, Abu al-Qasim al-Hasani, is also recorded on the ownership seal below the colophon, indicating that the manuscript was copied by the owner, a refined bibliophile.
