Robert Pinner, sold Rippon Boswell, Wiesbaden, May 15, 2004, lot 71
Rippon Boswell, 29 May 2014, lot 227
Formerly in the collection of Robert Pinner, this mafrash has three 'towers' of three octagonal guls, with banded columns between, and an extra column of 'comb' motifs infill on the right hand side of the field. There is a good balance of colour since the guls are alternately on a green or blue ground. For comparable examples, please see Tsareva, E., Teppiche aus Mittelasien und Kasachstan, Leningrad 1984, no. 57 and Reuben, D.M., Gols And Guls II, London 2001, no. 39. A closely related example in the Neville Kingston Collection is assigned to the Shih by Tsareva, see Tsareva, E., Turkmen Carpets: The Neville Kingston Collection, Stuttgart/London, 2016, fig. 91, p. 120.
