Description
A YOMUT MAIN CARPET, WEST TURKESTAN
first half 19th century
approximately 292 by 174cm; 9ft. 7in., 5ft. 8in.
With diagonal rows of elegantly drawn kepse guls of alternating colour schemes. The spacious disposition of the guls across the field results in a very handsome carpet, enhanced by its lovely condition. The elems are decorated with an unusual design of bi-coloured linked octagons containing and interspersed with small dotted diamonds, forming diagonal rows. A variant of this design decorates the field of the Yomut engsi, lot 75. With a syrga pattern border. A closely related, though very worn example from the Kurt Munkacsi and Nancy Jeffries Collection was offered by Austria Auction Company, 9 May 2015, lot 101, proposed as possibly Eagle Gul Group.
