Åmells Konstandel, Stockholm
Acquired by 2001
While Vilhelm Hammershøi limited his palette to tonal greys, whites and blues, Carl Holsøe employs a more naturalistic palette to render this intimate space. In this scene, the right angles of the carefully observed gilt framed landscapes are offset by the curvilinear cello, leafy potted plant and diagonal beams of sunlight. The harmonious image is meticulously crafted, while the brushwork maintains spontaneity and verve.
