THE SEA URCHIN
signed and dated: GILBERT / BAYES / 1932, and inscribed: MS 2/6
bronze, mid-brown patina
Overall the condition of the bronze is good with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The bronze is piped so that it can operate as a fountain; please note that the functioning of the fountain has not been tested by Sotheby’s and we recommend that buyers should consult a conservator should they wish to operate the fountain. There is a separate plastic pipe. The bronze was conceived as a garden sculpture. As such the patina is consistent with the bronze having been outdoors and exposed to the elements. The bronze has developed a greenish patina with particular areas of green, consistent with the material being placed outdoors. The patina has developed a variated appearance over time ranging from brown to green. There are areas of water staining to the bronze consistent with the function of the bronze and having been placed outdoors, in particular at the mouth and neck. There are some residues such as to the proper right thigh, and some bird droppings.
