Condition Report

Overall the condition of the marble is very good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is light surface dirt throughout, and the marble would benefit from mild professional cleaning. There are particular dirt marks to the woman's buttocks and the panther's haunches and tail at the back. There are small chips, notably to the panther's ears, Ariadne's proper right big toe, and the edges of the base. There is a small rectangular (probably original) marble insert to Ariadne's proper right arm. There are some small natural filled inclusions, notably to Ariadne's back and proper left arm at the back. Minor abrasions to her buttocks.

Catalogue Note

Ariadne on the Panther is undoubtedly the most famous model executed by Dannecker, court sculptor to the Dukes of Württemberg, and was widely copied during the 19th century. There are accounts dating back to 1805, of visitors queueing outside Dannecker's studio in order to see the widely discussed model in plaster. The prime version in marble, finished in 1814, is in the Liebieghaus Museum in Frankfurt (inv. no. 1569) - it was heavily damaged in World War II and has been restored. Curiously, Dannecker appears to have conceived the model without a commission, and is therefore indicative of his creativity and inventiveness as a sculptor.
