Description
Fusca (Pilar Cárdenas) (Mexican, b. 1977).
“My name is Pilar Cárdenas, also known as Fusca. I was born in Culiacán, México in 1977. My first experience as an artist was when I was very young, making comics, trying to defeat insomnia. The main reason why I became an artist was that I wanted to redesign the world around me, making it better. My early influences were painters like Goya and Gauguin and, later, strong female figures such as Louise Bourgeois, Lee Bontecou and Agnes Pelton. Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera and Jorge Camarena as well as graffiti are strong influences in my work.
I work primarily as a muralist in different cities and countries. I have a master's degree in psychoanalysis and art direction, and I am a self-taught artist.
The fundamentals of my work are the observations I make of everything around me. Using my imagination, I take these elements and rearrange them into better versions; in this way, new and more inspiring scenarios resurface. I am always looking for a larger purpose in my work, one that connects my reality with the best-imagined possibilities. This way I ease my soul.
My piece is titled Andrógino. I wanted to depict a being that is aware of the wholeness that structures them. The see-through parts of the body let us see what is present in their identity. The way that is painted with several thin layers lets the light go through it. This makes it look like they live in a timeless space.
Mestizaje is this for me, a way of carrying, in a conscious way, everything that we are, to erase the limits of our history and our identity. To be eternally expanded and make it visible for everyone to see.
I started with just the outline, and not knowing what it would look like. The piece itself took control of the process in a very spontaneous manner.” —Fusca
