Condition

The canvas is not lined. Examination under UV light reveals a layer of uneven varnish preventing the UV light from fully penetrating. However, examination does reveal a degraded varnish leaving a mottled appearance which makes it difficult to ascertain previous retouching. There is horizontal and vertical line of fluorescence close to the upper and left edges which appears to relate to the varnish having been disturbed when wet. There is an area of retouching just above the horizon to the right of the windmill, which pertains to a repaired tear of approximately 10cm; as well as, two tiny spots of retouching to the sky to the right-hand side of the windmill. There are areas of fine and stable craquelure predominantly to the sky. This work is in overall good condition.
