Sir James Reynolds (1865-1932) and thence by descent to the present owner
This watercolour was made for an engraving by T. Heawood in Picturesque Europe - The British Isles published by Cassell & Co in 1860. A watercolour of the same vista, looking over Edinburgh Prison to the castle, but differing in the foreground details, was sold at Sotheby's at Gleneagles (30 August 1994, lot 790).
The sheet appears to be sound. Slightly discoloured and some spots of foxing; otherwise in good condition overall.
Held under glass in a gilt plaster frame with a cream mount; ready to hang. Unexamined out of frame.
